Hey there! Now, I know some already have your Halloween costume done and ready, but for others such as myself, who wait till last minute, this is the perfect Halloween costume for you! In it’s entirety it took about 3 hours to complete. It is super simple and if you are not a beginner at the sewing machine, you could probably do it in 2 hours.
First, you will need:
2 1/2 – 3 yards of tulle. (You might need more depending on your waist size. I got powder blue and white)
2 inches more elastic than your waist size (The wide kind)
Clear Nail Polish
Satin Blanket Binding (I got a blue to match my colors)
Okay, lets get started! Get your Satin Blanket Binding and cut about 4 inches extra than your waist size.
Then, cut your elastic, stretch it, a little, but not too little, and pin it to the Satin Blanket Binding on one side, not in the middle!
After you have pinned the whole thing, It will look something like this:
You will want to space your pins more than this, I made a mistake of putting too many. 🙂
Then, sew the two together, both the top and the bottom, so it looks likes this:
It will be scrunchy when you are done sewing this is good!
Get your fabric and fold it in half, and, half, and half, etc, until it is a thin line, about 2-3 inches.
Then, cut about a 2 inch square. Do this with the rest of the fabric until it is all cut.
Next, cut a tiny hole or hole punch and put clear nail polish on the hole so it doesn’t fray.
Then get two of one color and align them up then fold it in half vertically, and then fold it horizontally until it is about this size:
Feed it through the hole and tie a knot. Then grab your other color and feed that through the hole and tie another knot. Space the holes out about 1/2 and inch to 1 inch apart.
Do this until you have used all of your tulle and the tutu has reached the end of the satin – make sure to about 2 – 3 inches of satin with no tulle on either side. We will use this for the velcro.
Then, fold the blue satin over and pin it.
Sew it together so that you can’t see the elastic. it will look like this:
Then, sew the velcro onto the area that is tulle free. Ta-Da!! You now have your super cute tutu for halloween!!
Because there is elastic and velcro, as your little ones get bigger, they can continue to wear the tutu as it stretches!
